Question | Answer |
mesosphere | layer above stratosphere, coldest layer of the atmosphere, lower layer of mantle |
outer core | outer shell of the earth's core, made of liquid nickel and iron |
lithosphere | outermost layer of the earth, consists of crust & upermost part of mantle, divided into tectonic plates |
asthenosphere | solid plastic layer of the mantle between meso&lithosphere, made of mantle rock which flows slowly resulting in the movement of tectonic plates |
inner core | center of the earth, solid nickel and iron |
geologists | studying the physical structure and processes of the Earth |
fault | a break in the earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another |
granite | igneous rock in the crust of the earth |
basalt | volcanic rock found on earth's surface |
subduction | two tectonic plates meet and move towards one another, with one sliding underneath the other and moving down into the mantle |
plates | lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates which glide along asthenoshpere |
Seismic wave | waves that travel through earth's interior during eathquake |
radiation | transfer of energy across space and in the atmoshpere |
convection | transfer of heat by air currents |
conduction | the flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the objects are placed in direct physical contact |
focus | the earthquake's underground point of origin |
epicenter | is the point on the Earth's surface that is directly above the point where an earthquake or other underground explosion originates or focus |
Pressure wave | wave produced by earthquakes |
density formula | D=M/V |
