Name the 4 theories of punishment. | Detterence; rehablitation; incapacitation/restraint; and, retribution. |
Define Deterrence. | Deter future criminal or unlawful conduct in the future. (Specific or General Detterence) |
Define Specific Deterrence. | Discouraging the offender from participating in unlawful conduct in the future. |
Define General Deterrence. | Discouraging the general public from engaging in criminal conduct in the future. |
Define Rehabilitation/Reformation. | Punishment given to offenders to try and make them a different (better) person less likely to commit crimes in the future. |
Give some examples of methods/services of rehabilitation. | Counseling; education programs; job training; AODA treatment; and, drunk drivng courses. |
Define Incapacitation/Restraint. | Punish the offernder to keep the person from committing a crime while they are incarcerated. |
Define Retribution. | The exaction of payment. "An eye for an eye." States that people should be punished for their wrong doing. Society's revenge. |
Discuss Denunciation or Condemnation. | A symbol of distinctively criminal "guilt" as an affirmation and reinforcement of moral standards, and as reassurance to the law-abiding. |
