Active Listening | Giving full attention and a concerted effort to understand the message being sent. |
Altered cognition | A decreased or lack of the brains ability to recieve, process, and send information. |
Assertive communication | interaction that takes into account the feelings and needs of the reciever. |
Clarifying | restating the patients message in a manner that asks the patient to verify the message recieved is accurate. |
Closed question | focused question that seeks a particular answer usually either yes or no. |
communication | use of words and behaviors to construct, send and interpret messages. |
Expressive asphasia | a physiologic condition in which an individual is unable to communcate a desired message. |
Focusing | a communication technique used when more specific information is needed to accurately understand the patients message. |
Gestures | movements used to emphasize the idea being communicated. |
Nontherapuetic communication | techinques both verbal and nonverbal that hinder the nurse-patient relationship. |
Nonverbal communication | the transmission of messages without the use of words |
One-way communication | a structured form of communication in which the sender is in control. |
Open-ended question | does not require a specific response and allows the individual to elaborate freely on a subject. |
Paraphrasing | suming up what the patient said in your own words. |
Reciever | the individual to whom a message is being conveyed. |
Receptive asphasia | a physiological condition in which an individual cannot recognize or interpret the message being recieved. |
Reflecting | technique that assists the patient to "reflect" on inner feelings and thoughts rather then seeking answers. |
Restating | saying what the patient said to you verbatem back to them in a question format. |
Sender | person conveying the message. |
Therapuetic communication | facilitates the formation of a positive nurse-patient relationship. |

Listening | hardest to learn but most effective method for patient care either active or passive |
Comfort Zone | 0-18 inches. necessary distance between two or more individuals that must be maintained to guard against personal threat or intimidation |
Personal Zone | 18 inches to 4 feet. Less intimidating to patient either sitting next to or standing next to them. |
Social Zone | 4-12 Feet. Used when speeking to a small group. |
Public Zone | 12 feet or more. Used for public speaking. |
