Question | Answer |
Continental drift | Wegener's hypothesis that all continents were once connected in a single large landmass that broke apart about 200 million years ago and drifted slowly to their current positions |
Mantle | Thin layer of tissue that covers a mollusk's body and that can secrete a shell |
Density | Measurable physical property that can be found by dividing the mass of an object by its volume |
Asthenosphere | Plasticlike layer of Earth which the lithospheric plates float and move around |
Oceanic Crust | The thin crust under the oceans is thinner and denser than continental crust |
Mass | The amount of matter in a given object |
Volume | The amount of space an object takes up |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space and is made up of different kinds of atoms; includes all things that can be seen, tasted, smelled, or touched but does not include heat, sound, or lgiht |
Plate Tectonics | Theory that Earth's crust and upper mantle are broken into plates that float and move around on a plasticlike layer of the mantle |
Equator | Imaginary line that wraps around Earth at 0 latitude, halfway between the north and south poles |
Prime Meridian | Imaginary line that represents 0 longitude and runs from the north pole through Greenwich, England, to the north pole |
Latitude | Distance in degree north or south of the equator |
Longitude | Distance in degrees east or west of the prime meridian |
Convection Current | Current in Earth's mantle that transfers heat in Earth's interior and is the driving force of plate tectonics |
Seafloor Spreading | Hess's theory that new seafloor is formed when magma is forced upward toward the surface at a mid-ocean rigde |
Scientific methods | problem-solving procedures that can include identifying the problem or question, gathering information, developing a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, analyzing the results, and drawing conclusion |
Pangaea | Large, ancient landmass that was composed of all the continets join together |
Scientific Theory | Explanation that is supported by results from repeated experimentation or testing |
Earthquake | Movement of the ground that occurs when rocks inside Earth pass their elastic, limit, break suddenly, and experience elastic rebound. |
