Question | Answer |
Plate | a large section of earths crust and rigid upper mantel that moves around on the athenosphere |
fault | surface along which rocks move when they pass their elastic limit and break |
earthquake | vibartions produced when rocks break along a fault |
normal fault | break in rock caused by tension forces where rock above the fault surfaces moves down relative to the rock below the fault surface |
reverse fault | break in rock caused by compressive forces where rock above the fault surface moves up and towards relative to the rock below the fault surface |
strike slip fault | break in rock caused by sheat forces where rocks move past eash other without much vertical movement |
wave | rythmic movement that carries energy through matter and space |
seismic waves | wave geverated by an earthquake |
focus | in an earthquake the point below earth surfaces where energy is released in the form of seismic waves |
primary waves | seismic wave that moves rock particles back and forth in the same direction that wave travels |
secondary waves | seimic waves that moves rock particles at right andles to the directon of the waves |
surface waves | seimic waves that moves rock paricle up and so down in a back rolling motion and a side to side swaying motion |
epicenter | point on earths surface directly above an earhtquakes focus |
seismograph | instrument used to register earthquake waves and record the time each arrived |
crest | the highest point of a wave |
magnitude | measure of the energy released during an earthquake |
liquification | occurs when wet soil acts more like liquid durring an earthquake |
tsumai | seismic sea wave that begins over and earthquake focus and can be hightly destructive when it crashes on the shore |
