Relative Location | Identify a place by its importance or convenience in relation to other places |
Absolute Location | Exact geographic location as indicated by degrees of longitude and latitude |
Intermediate Directions | Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest |
Cardinal Directions | North, South, East, West |
Legend | Key that explains symbols on a map |
Equator | The imaginary line that encircles the center of the globe, zero degrees latitude |
Longitude | Another name for meridians, Lines of longitude are measured east of west from Prime Meridian. |
Prime Meridian | Zero degrees longitude. It runs through western Europe and west Africa. |
Meridians | Imaginary Lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole. |
Latitude | Another name for parallels. Lines of latitude are measured north or south from the equator. |
Parallels | Imaginary lines that go around the globe from east to west. |
Climate | A pattern of weather that occurs over a long time. |
Weather | The daily condition of the air around and above us. |
Tributary | A stream or small river that flows into a larger river. |
Mouth | The point at which a river's waters empty into a larger body of water. |
Source | The place where a river begins, usually in highlands (mountains). |
Isthmus | A narrow strip of land that connects two larger pieces of land. |
Strait | A narrow strip of land that connects two larger bodies of water. |
Peninsula | A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides. |
Gulf | A part of a ocean or sea that extends into land. Larger than a bay. |
Delta | Soil deposited at the mouth of a river. |
Coast | Land along the ocean or sea. |
Cape | a point of land that extends into the ocean, sea or lake. |
Canyon | a narrow valley with high, steep sides. |
Bay | Part of a body of water that extends into the land. Smaller than a gulf. |
Archipelago | a group of islands |
Elevations | The height above the sea. |
Landforms | a surface features of the earth, major ones are mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains. |
