Community | is when many different species live together in a habitat |
Ecosystem | a community including the physical aspects of its habitat (soil, water, weather) |
Biotic factors | are organisms in a habitat |
Abiotic factors | are the physical aspects of a habitat |
Producers | organisms that first capture energy by photosynthesis (autotrophs) |
Consumers | all other organisms that consume plants or other organisms to obtain energy (heterotrophs) |
Decomposers | they eat the remains of dead plants and animals and create biomass. |
Trophic levels | |
Food chain | is the path of energy that travels through the trophic levels of an ecosystem |
Food web | is an interconnected group of food chains |
Competition | the struggle for resources (Animals: food, water, territory, mates) (Plants: light, minerals, water, space) in an ecosystem |
Interspecific competition | competition that occurs between members of different species. |
Intraspecific competition | competition that occurs between members of the same species. |
Predation | a relationship between two organisms in which one organism kills (predator) and devours another organism (prey). |
Symbiosis | a close long term relationship between two or more species that can be beneficial or harmful |
Mutualism | both organisms benefit from the relationship. |
Parasitism | the relationship between two organisms where one organism benefits (parasite) and the other is harmed (host). |
Commensalism | one organism benefits, the other organism is neither harmed or help |
Succession | the somewhat regular progression of species replacement |
Primary succession | when species begin to inhabit a place where life has not existed before |
Secondary succession | when species take over areas that have had previous growth |
Pioneer Species | |
What does a food chain show? | The transfer of energy from organism to organism |
What is the main source of energy for everything? | The sun |
What percentage of energy is passed between organisms? | 10% |
What are abiotic factors in an ecosystem? | The nonliving parts, sun, water, dirt, rocks, temperature, etc. |
What are the biotic factors in an ecosystem? | All of the living organisms in an ecosystem, animals, and plants |
An organisms role in an environment is called a | niche |
What are the three ways an organism interacts with it’s ecosystem? | competition, predation, and symbiosis |
The struggle for natural resources in an ecosystem is called | competition |
What do plants compete for in an ecosystem? | water, sun light, space, minerals |
What do animals compete for in an ecosystem? | food, water, territory, mates |
As populations rises in an ecosystem, competition does what? | rises |
As Competition rises in an ecosystem, populations will | decrease |
An organism that hunts and kills another organism is called a | predator |
The organism that is hunted and killed is called the | prey |
What are the three forms of symbiosis? | mutualism, parasitism, commensalism |
Symbiosis between two organisms that benefits both organisms is called | mutualism |
Interaction between two organisms where one benefits and one just doesn’t care | commensalism |
Ecology | the study of the interactions of living organisms with one another and with their physical environment |
Habitat | place where a particular population of species lives |
