Description: | Chemically related to atropine. Ipatropium is a bronchodilator used in the treatment of respiratory emergencies. If causes bronchial dilation and dries respiratory tract secretions by blocking acetylcholine receptors. |
Onset: | 5-15 minutes |
Duration: | 4-6 hours |
Indications: | Bronchospasm associated with: Asthma, COPD, Inhaled irritants |
Contraindications: | Hypersensitivity, Hypersensitivity to atropine or its derivatives, Hypersensitivity to soy products or peanuts, As primary treatment for acute bronchospasm |
Adverse reactions: | Cough, Nausea, Nervousness, Tachycardia, Palpatations, Constipation, Headache |
Precautions: | Elderly patients, Cardiovascular disease, Hypertension |
Dosage/Route: | 500mcg in 2.5 to 3mL NS via nebulizer, 2 sprays from a metered dose inhaler |
