Acquired characteristics | Characteristics acquired during an organisms lifetime that are NOT passed down to offspring (ex – tattoos) |
Adaptation | A variation that makes an organism better suited to its environment. Examples are: long claws, good sense of smell, white coat, blubber |
Evolution | A change in inherited characteristics of a species over time |
Fossil | The remains, imprints or evidence of past life. They are most likely to be found in sedimentary rock. |
Gradualism | A slow change of one species to a different new species. |
Homologous structures | Structures that evolved from similar body parts (ex. Bat wing and human arm) |

Mutation | Can be good if it allows the organism to better survive in its environment |

Variations | Differences between organisms of the same species. |
Vestigial Structure | Something that seems to have no function (ex. the human appendix) |
