plot | order of events in a selection |
introduction | beginning of a story revealing the setting, characters & hint of the conflict |
conflict | tension or struggle |
rising action | building of tension, development of conflict |
climax | turning point, point of decision, action that's been building up in the story takes a different turn |
falling action | incidents as a result of main character's decision |
resolution (conclusion) | ending of story, conflict should be resolved |
foreshadowing | hints of what is to come |
flashback | an episode which takes the reader back as though the event described is currently happening |
sub-plot | a story withint a story |
parallel episode | repeated elements of the plot or events happening at the same time--sometimes done w/out the main character’s knowledge |
external conflict | a problem outside the character |
internal conflict | a problem inside a character |
point of view | through whose eyes a story is being told |
1st person | a character in the story tells the story |
3rd person | a character outside the story tells the story |
symbol | has meaning in itself but represents something else |
mood | the feeling the reader gets upon reading a selection |
tone | author's attitude toward subject |
setting | where & when |
theme | main underlying idea of a selection |
moral | a lesson the story in trying to teach |
antagonist | opposes the main character |
protagonist | main character |
dialogue | talk between characters |
characterization | how an author creates life-like characters |
irony | a contrast between what appears to be & what really is |
imagery | words appealing to the 5 senses |
inference | a logical guess based on evidence |
