Question | Answer |
Cranial | Posterior aspect cavity. Formed by cranium; houses brain |
Vertebral canal | Posterior aspect cavity. Formed by vertebral column; contains spinal cord. |
Thoracic | Ventral Cavity. Chest cavity; bordered anteriorly and laterally by chest wall and inferiorly by diaphragm. Three components: Mediastinum, Pericardial, Pleural. |
Mediastinum | Contains the pericardial cavity, thymus, trachea, esophagus, and major blood vessels. |
Pericardial | Contains the heart. Serous Membrane: Pericardium. |
Pleural | Contains the lungs. Serous Membrane: Pleura. |
Abdominopelvic | Ventral Cavity. Composed of two parts: abdominal and pelvic cavities. |
Abdominal | Bordered superiorly by diaphragm & inferiorly by horizontal plane between superior ridges of hip bones. Associated w/ abdominal viscera: stomach, spleen, liver, pancreas, small intestine, most of large intestine, kidney, ureters. S. Membrane: Peritoneum. |
Pelvic | Between hip bones & interior to horizontal plane between the superior ridges of the hip bones. Associated w/ pelvic viscera: urinary bladder & urethra, internal reproductive organs, some of the large intestine. S. Membrane: Peritoneum. |
Serous membranes | Consist of a continuous 2-layered sack. The visceral layer covers organs. The parietal layer lines the body cavity. Contains lubricating film of serous fluid to reduce friction. |
