Question | Answer |
Purpose | What we want to find out in our investigation |
Research | Finding background information from books, classmates, and the internet |
Hypothesis | A possible explanation for an observation |
Procedures | The steps you follow in a scientific investigation |
Scientific Investigation | The process we use to find out more about something. The experiment! |
Control | This stays exactly the same in an experiment |
Independent Variable | A variable that the scientist changes |
Dependent Variable | The responding variable |
Data | The information that we colelct. This is usually put into tables, charts, or graphs |
Observation | Using the five senses to gather information |
Conclusion | What we learned from our investigation and how we might use it again |
Investigating | To find out, to solve, or figure out |
Experimenting | Identification and control of variables to arrive at a solution |
Predicting | Looking for outcomes that you expect to happen based on data and observations |
Observing | Using the 5 senses to describe: taste, smell, touch, sound, and sight |
Communicating | How information is passed on |
Inferring | Not a direct observation; this skill involves making a decision based on backgrounds |
Classifying | Putting objects into logical groups |
Measuring | Using tools to find and record data |
Matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass |
Solid | The particles are held very tightly together. It has a fixed shape. |
Liquid | This does not have its own shape. The particles are slightly spread out. |
Gas | The particles are spread very far apart. This does not have its own shape. |
Atom | The smallest particle of an element. |
Nucleus | The center of an atom. It holds the protons and the neutrons. |
Proton | This has a positive charge. It is found inside the nucleus. |
Neutron | This has no charge. It is found inside the nucleus. |
Electron | This has a negative charge. It is found on an orbit. |
Neils Bohr | He created the electron cloud model of the atoms |
Mendeleyev | He created one of the first periodic tables |
Periodic Table | This is a chart that organized the elements according to their atomic numbers |
Element | Matter made of one kind of atom. They can be found on the periodic table. |
Atomic Mass | This tells you how many protons and neutrons are in an element |
Atomic Number | This tells you how many protons are in an element |
Compound | Two or more elements held together by a chemical bond |
Chemical Formula | Symbols and numbers that describe a compound |
Chemical Equations | This shows what happens in a chemical reaction |
Chemical Change | This produces a new substance with new properties. The original substance is gone. |
Physical Change | This changes the appearance of a substance |
