Question | Answer |
Hypothesis | an intelligent guess made before an investigation |
Theory | an assumption based upon gathered information |
Constants | all the things that must be kept the same to make an experiment fair and valid |
Independent Variable | the one thing an experimenter changes in an experiment |
Dependent Variable | the result the experimenter is looking for |
Controlled Experiment | experiment with only one independent variable |
Mean | a number found by calculating the sum and then dividing by the number of figures in a set of data |
Mode | the number that occurs most often in a set of data |
Energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
Potential Energy | energy from position or condition |
Kinetic Energy | energy from motion |
Cycle | a series of steps that repeats |
Force | a push or pull |
Friction | a force that acts to oppose sliding between two surfaces that are touching |
Speed | distance divided by time |
Matter | anything that has mass, takes up space; can be a solid, liquid or gas |
Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
Weight | a measure of how hard gravity pulls on an object |
Gravity | a pull toward the center of an object |
Inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
Momentum | a measure of how hard it is to stop an object (depends on the object's mass and velocity) |
Velocity | speed and direction of a moving object |
Newton's First Law | an object at rest will stay at rest, an object in motion will stay in motion, in a straight line, at a constant speed unless some force acts upon it |
Newton's Third Law | states that forces act in equal but opposite pairs OR for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction |
Volume | the amount of space occupied by an object |
Meniscus | the bottom of the curved surface of a liquid in a graduated cylinder |
Density | mass divided by volume |
Displace | to push out of the way |
Buoyant force | upward force exerted by a fluid on any object in that fluid |
Archimedes Principle | the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid it displace |
Fulcrum | the point on which a lever turns |
