| Term | Definition |
| cell | the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body |
| What is the smallest thing | a cell |
| what is the cell theory | All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of life. All cells arise from pre-existing cells. |
| nucleus | a mixture of DNA and proteins that form the chromosomes found in the cells of humans and other higher organisms |
| chromatin | a mixture of DNA and proteins that form the chromosomes found in the cells of humans and other higher organisms |
| cell membrane | found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment |
| Cytoplasm | The gel-like substance inside the cell membrane that contains structures that carry out life processes. |
| Organelle | In eukaryotic cells, the structures within the cytoplasm that break down food, move wastes, and store material. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | A cell organelle consisting of folding membranes that moves materials around within the cell. |
| Ribosome | A cell organelle on which a protein is made. |
| Golgi Bodies | Cell organelles consisting of stacks of membrane-covered sacs that package and move proteins to the outside of the cell. |
| Mitochondria | Cell organelles that break down food molecules and release energy. |
| Lysosome | A cytoplasmic organelle that contains chemicals and digests wastes and worn out cell parts. |
| Cell Wall | In plants, the rigid structure is made of cellulose that surrounds a plant cell membrane and supports and protects it. |
| Chloroplast | Plant cell organelles in which light energy is changed into chemical energy in the form of sugar during the process of photosynthesis. |
| Tissue | Groups of similar cells that do the same sort of work. |
| Organ | A structure made up of different types of tissues that work together to do a specific job. |
