| Term | Definition |
| Abrasion | loss/damage of superficial layer; from scrapping across rough surface |
| Amputation | completely severed body part |
| Avulsion | soft tissue completely loose or hanging by a flap |
| Burns | soft tissue damage occurs as a result of heat |
| Closed Injuries | injuries that occurs beneath the skin but the surface of the skin stays in tact |
| Compartment Syndrome | swelling in confined space that produces dangerous pressure; may cut off blood flow |
| Contact Burn | burn from touch of hot object |
| Contamination | presence of infectious organism or foreign body |
| Contusion | a bruise; bleeding under skin |
| Crush Syndrome | metabolic derangement from crushed body parts |
| Crushing Injury | great amount of force applied to body resulting in injury |
| Dermis | inner layer of the skin; contains hair follicles, sweat glands, nerve endings, and blood vessels |
| Ecchymosis | discoloration from closed wound- signifies bleeding |
| Epidermis | outer layer of skin- protective layer |
| Evisceration | displacement of organs outside the body |
| Excited Delirium | agitate behavior, disorientation, hallucinations, or delusions |
| Fascia | connective tissue that covers arteries, veins, tendons, ligaments |
| Flame Burn | caused by open flame |
| Flash Burn | exposure to intense heat (explosion) |
| Full Thickness (3rd Degree) Burns | all skin layers, subcutaneous layers, muscle, bone, organ |
| Hematoma | blood collected in body's tissues or organs |
| Impaled Object | penetrate the skin, but remain in place |
| Incision | sharp, smooth cut |
| Laceration | deep, jagged cut |
| Mucous Membranes | linings of body cavities and passages that are in direct contact with the outside environment |
| Occlusive Dressing | Petroleum (Vaseline) gauze, aluminum foil or plastic |
| Open Injuries | break in skin surface or mucous membrane |
| Partial Thickness (2nd Degree) Burns | epidermis and some portion of the dermis- blisters, skin is red, white moist, mottled |
| Penetrating Wound | injury from sharp piercing object |
| Rapid | infected with rabies |
| Rule of 9s | system that assigns percentages to the body to calculate amount of skin involved |
| Scald Burn | burn caused by hot liquids |
| Steam Burn | from exposure to hot steam |
| Superficial (1st Degree) Burns | only epidermis layer- only red |
| Thermal Burns | burns caused by heat |
