Question | Answer |
Food chain | Represents the transfer of energy from one organism to another in one direct line. |
Food web | Shows all of the energy transfers in an ecosystem (many interconnected chains). |
Decomposer | An organism that breaks down a dead material - such as bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and some insects. |
Predator | An animal that hunts, kills, and eats other animals to survive. |
Prey | An animal that the predators consume. |
Consumer | Any organism that eats food |
Producer | An organism that makes it's own food through photosynthesis - PLANTS |
Carnivore | A consumer that eats only meat |
Herbivore | A consumer that eats only plants |
Omnivore | A consumer that eats plants or meat |
Photosynthesis | A process whereby plants use light to synthesize (make) glucose (sugar) using carbon dioxide and water. [carbon dioxide + water = sugar + oxygen] |
Chlorophyll | A green chemical in a plant that is responsible for absorbing light energy for photosynthesis |
Carbon dioxide | A chemical that is made from carbon and oxygen that is the by-product (waste) of cellular respiration. It is also used by plants to make glucose (sugar). |
Glucose | Sugar (made during photosynthesis) |
Oxygen | A chemical that animals breath in for use in cellular respiration and plants give off as a waste |
Bacteria | Microorganisms that can decompose dead matter and can sometimes cause infectious diseases |
Fungi | A kingdom of organisms that decompose dead organisms; includes mushrooms and yeast. |
Nitrogen | A chemical that gets cycled in the environment and is necessary for protein building. |
Energy pyramid | Shows the flow of energy in an ecosystem - powered by the sun. Less energy is passed to each level going up. |
Carbon | A chemical that gets cycled from plants to animals during the process of cellular respiration and photosynthesis - a major component of sugar |
Cellular Respiration | A process in the cells where living things release the energy found in sugar (glucose) |
Limiting Factor | Anything that restricts the number of organisms that can live in an ecosystem (amount of food, predators, living space, etc.) |
Energy Pyramid | Shows the flow of energy in an ecosystem - powered by the sun. Less energy is passed to each level going up. |
carrying capacity | the maximum population of a certain species that can be supported by the resources in an environment. population usually goes up until it reaches this level. limiting factors will reduce this. |
