Word | Definition |
Respiratory System function | 1. to take in oxygen from the air and bring to the circulatory system and cells 2. exhale co2 and water |
Respirtation | process when oxygen and glucose go through a series of chemical reactions in your cells, much different than breathing |
3 products of repiration | carbon dioxide, energy, and water |
Nose | where air comes in through body, warms up air, moistens & filters |
Pharynx | back of mouth, upper throat, also known as throat |
Larynx | voice box, 2 folds of connective tissue that streach across the opening produce sound, vibrate when air passes them, contract when you talk |
Trachea | long tube, covered by epiglottis, reinforced by rings of cartilage, divides into brochi |
Brochi | divide into bronchiles |
Bronchiles | enter lungs, divide up even more |
Alveoli | small air sacs in lungs (300 mil), increase surface space of lungs, allow more air to be inhaled, surrounded by capillaries, gas exchange takes place in alveoli |
Cilia | tiny hair like things that sweep mucus into the throat |
Lungs | main organs in the repiratory system |
Diaphragm | large, dome shaped muscle at base of lungs, expands when breathing, contracts when exhaling |
Air | 21% air, 78% nitrogen, 1% carbon dioxide, helium and others |
