What is a Life Cycle? | Definition |
life cycle | The series of distinct stages of life that most organisms grow and mature through |
direct development | A kind of growth where organisms keep the same body features as they grow larger |
metamorphosis | A change in the shape or characteristics of an organism's body as it grows |
incomplete metamorphosis | organisms with 3 stages of change in shape or characteristics during its development; egg, nymph, and adult (examples: cockroaches, grasshoppers, box elder bugs, silverfish, crickets, mayflies, termites, dragon flies, praying mantis) |
complete metamorphosis | organisms with 4 stages of change in shape or characteristics during its development; egg, larva, pupa and adult (examples: beetles, butterflies, moths, wasps, bees, ants, fleas, houseflies) |
