| matter | anything that takes up space and has mass |
| states of matter | the forms that matter can take; solid, liquid, or gas |
| property | something about matter that you can observe using your senses |
| atom | one of the tiny particles that make up all of matter |
| mass | amount of matter |
| volume | amount of space matter takes up |
| density | measure of the amount of matter in a certain amount of space |
| solid | matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space |
| liquid | matter that does not have a definite shape but takes up a definite amount of space |
| gas | the form of matter which has no shape, has particles that are not connected to each other, and takes up whatever space is available |
| buoyancy | the ability to float in liquid (or air) |
| physical change | a change that makes matter look different without becoming a new substance |
| chemical change | a change that causes one kind of matter to become a different kind of matter |
| mixture | two or more kinds of matter that are placed together but can be easily separated |
| solution | a mixture in which one or more substances dissolves in another |
