| what are stars | A star is an object made up of gas and it is luminous |
| Why are stars luminous | Stars are luminous because it is a result of nuclear reactions |
| What are nuclear reactions | nuclear reactions occur between two hydrogen atoms when they fuse to become Helium |
| what are the four phases of a star | phase 1 - formation phase 2 - the stable period phase 3 - the red giant phase 4 - the white dwarf |
| phase 1 - formation | There are large gas clouds in space, called nebulae. |
| what is an nebulae | singular nebula |
| phase 2 - the stable period | over billions of years the star becomes stable. |
| Phase 3 - the red giant | when the star has used up all its supplies of hydrogen in its core, it begins burning helium on its outer parts |
| phase 4 - the white dwarf | once the red giant has turned all the hydrogen that it contains both in its core and on its surface to helium |
| What is a Galaxy | A galaxy is a collection of millions or billions of stars, along with gas and dust all held together by gravitational forces |
| what are gravitational forces | it is the force that keeps the earth from flying away from the sun |
| Our Solar System | our solar system is made up of the Sun and the planets that orbit around it |
| What are Planets | to be called a planet three conditions must be met |
| what are the three conditions must be met | 1. The object must orbit a star such as our sun 2. The object must be big enough to allow its own gravity to pull it inwards to make it look like a sphere 3. the object must be big enough to allow its own gravity to move other objects around it |
| what are the Terrestrial Planets | the solar system's terrestrial planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars |
| What are the Jovian Planets | the Jovian planets are the gas giants in our solar system: Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune |
| what are planetoids | A planetoid is a dwarf planet. These objects that are: Too large to be asteroids and too small to be planets an example is Pluto |
| How do Planets orbit | Planets orbit around the sun which is the major point of gravitational pull |
