| dichotomous key | a classification system to categorize and compare organisms |
| ecology | branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. |
| population | A population is a group of individuals of the same species inhabiting the same area. |
| community | interacting species living in the same place. |
| ecosystem | a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. |
| biotic factors | Living things: Ex.'s Plants, Animals, Fungi, Bacteria, Fish, Alga, Seaweed |
| abiotic factors | Non Living things: Ex.'s Waterways, Soil, Sun, Wind, Rain, Temperature |
| Symbiosis Relationship | close relationship between two species in which at least one species benefits. |
| Mutualism | a relationship between two organisms of different species "work together," each benefiting from the relationship. |
| Commensualism | a relationship between individuals of two species in which one species obtains food or other benefits from the other without either harming or benefiting the latter. |
| Parasitism | a symbiotic relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or in another organism, the host, causing it some harm, and is adapted structurally to this way of life. |
| Autotroph | Producers - Make their own food. Ex . Plants, Lichen, Algae |
| Heterotroph | Consumers- Must obtain/eat Food to get Energy |
| Primary Consumers | Organisms that Eat Producers |
| Secondary Consumers | Organisms that Eat Primary Consumers. Usually are Carnivores. |
| Decomposers | Organism that decomposes Organic Material. Ex. Fungus, Mushroom, Bacteria |
| Scavengers | An animal that feeds on dead plant material. Ex. Vultures, Coyotes |
| Arrows in a Food Chain/Web | Shows Transfer of Energy |
| Energy Pyramids | Shows how energy flows - 10% Rule - Each trophic Level Loses 10 % of Energy as it goes up - ENERGY IS NOT RECYCLED |
| Biomass Pyramid | Shows living mass in each trophic level |
| Ecological Pyramid | Shows the Relationship between different organisms |
