| Term | Definition |
| cell | basic unit of structure and function in a living thing |
| cell membrane | forms the outside boundary of the cell |
| nucleus | the control center that directs the cell's activities and contains the information that determines the cells form and function |
| cytoplasm | clear, jellylike substance containing many cell structures called organelles |
| tissue | a group of similar cells that perform the same function |
| muscle tissue | can contract and shorten, the muscle tissue make parts of your body move |
| nervous tissue | directs and controls the process,& carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and other parts of the body |
| connective tissue | provides support for your body and connect all its parts, examples are bone and fat tissues |
| epithelial tissue | protects the delicate structures of the body; skin is epithelial tissue. the lining of your digestive system is also epithelial tissue that allows you to digest and absorb nutrients in your food |
| organ | is a structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue and performs a specific job |
| organ system | a group of organs that work together to perform a major function |
| homeostasis | the process in which the body is kept stable in spite of the changes in the external environment |
| stress | the reaction of your body to potentially threatening , challenging or disturbing events |
| skeleton | is made up of all the bones in your body |
| vertebra | the 26 small bones that make up your backbone |
| joint | is a place in the body where two bones come together |
| ligament | strong connective tissue that holds bones together |
| cartilage | a connective tissue that is more flexible than bone and that protects the ends of bones and keep them from rubbing each other |
| compact bone | hard, dense bone tissue that is beneath the outer membrane of a bone |
| spongy bone | a layer of bone tissue having many small spaces and found just inside the layer of compact bone |
| marrow | the soft connective tissue that fills the internal spaces in bone |
| osteoporosis | a condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily |
