| Term | Definition |
| observation | using tools and senses to document facts, used to make hypothesis and predictions |
| data | recorded observations / facts |
| hypothesis | a written answer for a scientific question that includes a prediction that is testable |
| experiment | a controlled study used to test a hypothesis by testing the effects of one thing on another |
| independent variable | the condition or factor that is changed by the scientists, goes on the x-axis of a graph |
| dependent variable | data being measured and collected, goes on the y-axis of a graph |
| constant | the conditions of an experiment that do not change |
| pie graph | graph used to compare proportions (percentages) in different categories such as water use by consumers |
| bar graph | graph used to compare different categories for a continuous variable such as average household water use by county |
| line graph | graph used to illustrate the data of an independent variable that is collected continuously such as heart rate over time or rate of ice melting |
| scientific methods | the pattern of investigation procedures |
| variable | something in an experiment that changes, either on purpose or as the result of changing something else. |
| experimental control | the trial or group that is used to compare the experimental trial or group to. It is often viewed as "normal conditions" |
| bias | this occurs when a scientist's expectations change how the results of an experiment are analyzed or how the conclusions are made |
| model | this represents an ides, event, or object to help people better understand it. |
| volume | the amount of space occupied by an object |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| mass | a measurement of the amount of matter in an object |
| density | the ratio of mass to volume that tells the amount of matter in a given volume |
| x-axis | the horiztontal axis of a graph that corresponds to the independent variable. |
| y-axis | the vertical axis of a graph that corresponds to the dependent variable |
