| Term | Definition |
| Performing Media | A broad musical concept term that relates to sound sources and instruments (Their Names and Roles) |
| Tone Colour | Refers to the category or family an instrument belongs to, as well as the type of ensemble and adjective to describe it's sound. |
| Texture | The layers of sound and their relationship. |
| String Quartet | Ensemble comprising of two violins, a viola and a cello. |
| Jazz Ensemble | Ensemble comprising of mostly acoustic instruments with syncopated melodies played by vocals, horns or piano, light drumming and walking bass lines. |
| Rock Ensemble | Ensemble comprising mostly electronic instruments including lead and rhythm guitars, keyboards, bass guitar and drum set. |
| Contemporary Ensemble | A variation on the rock ensemble that includes more electronic, particularly, digital audio production. Often plays in a wide variety of musical styles. |
| Chamber Orchestra | Term referring to any variation of the symphony orchestra that uses fewer instruments and a more narrow range of tone colours. |
| Acapella | A vocal ensemble that uses no instrumental accompaniment. |
| Acoustic Instrumentation | Instruments that require no electricity to resonate (be loud). Have a narrow range of dynamic variation. |
| Electronic Instrumentation | Instruments that require electricity to produce sound. Have a wide range of dynamic levels. |
| Synthesiser | An electronic instrument that mimics the sound of other instruments or can create its own unique tone colours. |
| Melody Role | The main layer of pitched sounds that is most prominent and memorable. e.g. The lead vocals during the verse, chorus and bridge section of a pop song. |
| Harmony Role | A tuned layer of sound that supports the Melody Role. Usually sustained chords on the keyboard or single notes are are performed by backing vocals. |
| Harmony & Rhythm | A tuned layer of sound that supports the Main Melody and outlines the pulse in the music. Usually performed by Rhythm Guitar or Bass Guitar in an ensemble. |
| Rhythm Role | An untuned layer of sound that stylistically drives the pulse and tempo in the music. Performed exclusively by Drums and Untuned Percussion. |
