| fossil | the preserved remains or traces of plants and animals that lived in the past. Fossils are found in sedimentary rock. |
| imprint | a mark made by pressing something into a softer substance so that its outline is reproduced. |
| paleontologist | a scientist who studies Earth's history by observing the fossil record |
| evidence | an outward sign or indication about something |
| adaptation | a characteristic that an organism has that helps it to survive in their environment; both structural and behavioral characteristics |
| instinct | an inherited behavior that an organism just knows how to do without being taught. |
| camouflage | a physical adaptation of an organism that allows it to blend in and hide from predators. |
| nocturnal | a behavioral adaptation in which an animal hunts at night and sleeps in the day |
| migration | a behavioral adaptation in which animals "travel" long distances during the seasons to increase their survival. |
| hibernation | a long-period of inactivity (sleep) of some animals during the winter season |

| mimicry | An animal's resemblance to another organism in color, shape or design in order to escape predators or to attract prey |
