| Term | Definition |
| population | the number of people living in a region such as a city, state, or country |
| population density | shows how crowded an area is by calculating the average number of people living in a square unit of land |
| sparsely populated | describes any place where only a few people live and they are far apart from each other |
| densely populated | describes a place where a lot of people live close together |
| rural | a population region located in places like the countryside, a forest, the desert, or up in the mountains |
| urban | a population region located inside a city |
| suburban | a population region located in a residential community just outside a city |
| metropolis | a large city that becomes the political and cultural center of a region |
| birth rate | the number of babies born in a region for every thousand people |
| death rate | the number of people that die in a region for every thousand people |
| uninhabited | nobody lives there |
| region | an area that has one or more unifying characteristics that set it apart from other areas. |
