| Term | Definition |
| Subduction | Occurs at converging plate boundaries; the process where one plate slides under another. |
| Tectonic Plate | One of the pieces of the Earth’s rocky crust that rests and moves on the semi – liquid mantle. |
| Divergent Boundary | The lithospheric plates are moving away from each other. |
| Convergent Boundary | A boundary where two pieces of the Earth’s crust are colliding. |
| Transform Boundary | The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past one another. |
| Uplift | When forces within the Earth push up a section of crust. |
| Rift Zone | An area where two tectonic plates are moving away from one another. |
| Sea Floor Spreading | New ocean floor is created at a mid – ocean ridge as two tectonic plates move away from one another. |
| Fault | A crack within the Earth’s rocky crust. |
| Contour Lines | On a map, a line that connects points of equal elevation above sea level. |
| Contour Interval | The difference in elevation between any two contour lines on a topographic map. |
| Index Contour Lines | A contour lines that is darker than nearby lines and has its elevation labeled. |
| Weathering | The process of being broken apart by water, air, or ice. |
| Mechanical Weathering | Changes in the size and shape of a rock. |
| Chemical Weathering | A change in the materials that make up a rock. |
| Erosion | The process of moving rock from place to place. |
| Topographic Map | A map that shows the shape and elevation of the land surface using contour lines, and shows other land features. |
| Satellite Images | Photographs made by means of artificial satellites. |
| Land Features | Any naturally occurring landform located on Earth. |
