Term | Definition |
Xylem | Vascular tissue that carries water upwards from the roots; becomes tree rings |
Phloem | Vascular tissue responsible for the transport of nutrients and the carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis; transports up and down plant |
Vascular | Consisting of tissue that can transport materials with the use of vessels or xylem and phloem |
Nonvascular | The lack of tissue to transport materials within a system |
Stomate/Stomata | Opening in certain plant cells needed for gas exchange |
Guard cells | Curved cells that surround a stomate, becoming larger or smaller according to the pressure within the cells |
Roots | Part of a plant that attaches it to the ground or to a support, carrying water and nourishment to the rest of the plant |
Leaves | Organ of a plant responsible for photosynthesis |
Shoot system | System found above ground and includes the organs such as leaves, buds, stems, flowers (if the plant has any), and fruits (if the plant has any) |
Stems | Main body or stalk of a plant or shrub, typically rising above ground |
Vascular system | System consists of xylem and phloem responsible for transport |
Root system | System found below ground and includes many organs to perform the function of absorbing nutrients and water. |
Flowers | Holds the male and female reproductive organs of angiosperms |
Fruit | Provides the covering for seeds and can be fleshy like an apple or hard like a nut |
Pistil | Female reproductive structure composed of stigma, style, and ovary; also known as carpel |
Stamen | Male reproductive structure composed of the anther and the filament |
Pollen | Male sex cell, plant sperm |
Pollination | Act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma |
Seeds | Embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering |
Petal | Leafy structures that comprise a flower; usually used to attract a pollinator |
Style | Connects the ovary and the stigma and is where the pollen tubes grows |
Ovule | Female reproductive cell that will become the seed once fertilized |
Stigma | Place where pollen germinates after the pollen lands |
Pollinator | Anything that moves polle into the ovary of the same plant or another plant of the same kind |
Phototropism | Growth of plants toward a light source |
Geotropism/Gravitropism | Growth of plants in response to gravity |
Thigmotropism | Growth of plants in response to touch |
Tropism | The response of an organism, especially a plant, to an external stimulus by growth in certain direction |
Hydrotropism | Response of plants to water |
Auxin | Plant hormone that is made in the tips of plant cells; they determine how long a cell will grow |
