Cell Cycle | events in the life of a cell that results in growth, duplication of DNA in order to produce new cells |
G1 | phase of cell growth prior to cell division |
S | phase for DNA synthesis |
G2 | cell goes through growth phase; DNA copy is checked for mistakes more cytoplasm and organelles are made |
G0 | carries out normal functions but does not divide; these cells remove themselves from the cell cycle |
Interphase | includes G phases and S phase |
Mitosis | phase where cell divides its identical copied DNA to make 2 identical diploid cells; includes prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase |
Prophase | replicated chromosomes condense; nuclear envelope breaks down; mitotic spindles begin to form |
Metaphase | microtubules attach to chromosomes aligning them on equator |
Anaphase | sister chromatids are pulled apart by spindle microtubules; 2 sets of daughter chromosomes created |
Telophase | daughter chromosomes reach spindle poles; nuclear envelope reforms around the two nuclei |
Cytokinesis | two new daughter cells formed; occurs after mitosis |
Diploid | cell with 2 sets of chromosomes (1 set from each parent); not found in gametes; end product of mitosis |
Somatic Cells | all cells except sex cells (also known as gamete like sperm and egg); diploid cells; result of mitosis |
