articular cartilage | hyaline cartilage that covers ends of bones in synovial joints |
bursa | a sac-like, fluid-filled structure, lined with synovial membrane, near a joint |
cartilaginous joint | two or more bones joined by cartilage |
compact bone | dense tissue in which cells are organized in osteons (Haversian systems) with no spaces |
diaphysis | the shaft of a long bone |
endochondral bone | bone that begins as hyaline cartilage that is subsequently replaced by bone tissue |
epiphyseal plate | cartilaginous layer within the long bone epiphysis that grows |
epiphysis | the end of a long bone |
fibrous joint | two or more bones joined by connective tissue containing many fibers |
hemopoiesis | the production of blood cells |
intramembranous bone | bone that forms from membrane-like layers of primitive connective tissue |
lever | a simple mechanical device consisting of a rod,fulcrum, weight, and a source of energy that is applied to some point on the rod |
marrow | connective tissue in spaces within bones that includes blood-forming stem cells |
medullary cavity | cavity containing marrow within the diaphysis of long bone |
meniscus | fibrocartilage that separates the articulating surfaces of bones in the knee |
osteoblast | a bone-forming cell |
osteoclast | a cell that erodes bone |
osteocyte | a mature bone cell |
periosteum | fibrous connective tissue covering on the surface of a bone |
spongy bone | bone that consists of bar and plates separated by irregular spaces; cancellous bone |
synovial joint | a freely moving joint |
