Term | Definition |
Hypothesis | A focused question used as basis to design an experiment; testable, based on prior knowledge |
Theory | Well supported scientific explanation; concept supported by a broad range of observations, hypotheses, experiments and data |
Experimental (independent) variable | A factor that is hypothesized to influence a dependent variable |
Response (dependent) variable | Response that may be under the influence of an independent variable |
Control group | goes through all aspects of the experiment, but lacks the factor being tested |
Variable | Any changeable element in an experiment |
Homeostasis | A state of internal constancy in the presence of changing external conditions |
Adaptation | Inherited trait that permits an organism to survive and reproduce |
Experimental group | Group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested |
Null hypothesis | Hypothesis being tested shows no significant difference between the two variables, any observed difference is due to sampling or experimental error |
