Term | Definition |
pH | a measure of how acidic or basic something is on a scale of 0 to 14 |
covalent bond | a bond formed by the sharing of electrons, like the bond between the oxygen and the hydrogens of a water molecule |
hydrogen bond | a weak bond, like the bond between the oxygen and the hydrogen of two separate water molecules |
ionic bond | a bond formed by the transfer of electrons |
surface tension | an increased attraction of molecules at the surface of a liquid that causes water drops to hold their shape |
solvent | the greater part of a solution, able to dissolve other substances, (the water in salt water) |
acid | a pH value between 0 and 7 |
reactant | what goes into a chemical reaction, written before the arrow |
cohesion | water molecules being attracted to other water molecules |
heat capacity/specific heat | the heat required to raise the temperature of a substance by a specific amount |
capillary action | The movement of a liquid through a narrow space as a result of cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension |
base | a pH value between 7 and 14 |
adhesion | water molecules being attracted to different molecules |
polarity | the direction of electrical charge |
solute | the lesser part of a solution, what is being dissolved, (the salt in salt water) |
product | what comes out of a chemical reaction, written after the arrow |
