Schedule I Substances (CI) | High abuse potential & no accepted medical use in US. Includes drugs that are not available for prescribing, dispensing or administering. DEA does allow for research involving Schedule I substances. This requires a separate registration as a researcher |
Schedule II Substances (CII / CIIN or C2 / 2N) | High abuse potential with severe psychological or physical dependence liability, Accepted medical use in the United States. Available for practitioners to prescribe, dispense and administer. |
Schedule III Substances (CIII / IIIN or C3 / 3N) | Potential for abuse less than that of substances in Schedules I and II Currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US Abuse of drug may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence |
Schedule IV Substances (CIV) | Low potential for abuse relative to substances listed in Schedule III Currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States Abuse may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence |
Schedule V Substances (CV) | Low potential for abuse relative to substances listed in Schedule IV Currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States Abuse may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence |
