Term | Definition |
Cerebrum | The center of intellect and consciousness |
Cerebellum | Responsible for coordination of movement, posture, and muscle tone that are the mechanisms of balance |
Hypothalamus | Controls body temperature, appetite, and water balance; links nervous and endocrine systems |
Brainstem | Consists of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata |
Midbrain | Mediates visual and auditory reflexes; it controls cranial nerves III and IV and certain eye movements |
Pons | Has links that connect various parts of the brain, and helps to regulate respiration |
Medulla oblongata | Regulates heartbeat, respiration, and blood pressure and controls the center for swallowing, coughing, sneezing, and vomiting; and relays messages to other parts of the brain. |
PNS | Peripheral nervous system composed of the sensory organs, cranial nerves, and spinal nerves and ganglia that link the sensory organs, muscles, and other parts of the body to the brain and spinal cord. |
CNS | Central nervous system composed on cerebrum, cerebellum, hypothalamus, brainstem, and midbrain |
Sensory Nerves | Carry signals from the body to the CNS |
Motor Nerves | Carry signals from the CNS to the body |
Neurotransmitters | Acetylcholine, dopamine, norephinephrine, serotonin, and epinephrine help transmit stimulus from one neuron to the next |
Myelin sheath | A white, fatty covering that speeds the conduction of nerve impulses |
Sympathetic Nerves | Mobilizes energy to initiate changes aimed at maintaining or restoring homeostasis |
Parasympathetic Nerves | Conserves and restores energy used to maintain homeostasis |
CSF | Cerebral Spinal Fluid cushions and protects the brain and spinal cord. |
ICP | Intracranial Pressure measures the pressure inside the skull. Excess CSF can cause rises in pressure that leads to loss of brain tissue and functiion. |
LOC | Level of Consciousness is often measured using the Glasgow Coma Scale |
