DAW Code | Meaning |

DAW 1 | Substitution not allowed. Brand product is 'medically necessary' per the prescriber. |
DAW 2 | Substitution allowed but the patient requested the brand name product to be dispensed. |
DAW 3 | Substitution allowed but the pharmacist requested the brand name product to be dispensed. |
DAW 4 | Substitution allowed but the generic product is not in stock. |
DAW 5 | Substitution allowed but the brand name is the pharmacy's generic drug (the pharmacy only stocks the brand name of the drug and doesn't carry the generic drug). |
DAW 6 | Override DAW code. This is the all-purpose override code and is used whenever an override is needed. |
DAW 7 | Substitution allowed but brand mandated by state law. (Some generic medications may not have passed state testing). |
DAW 8 | Substitution allowed but generic product is not available in the market place due to shortage, recall, or licensing issue. |
DAW 9 | Other. Another all purpose code used whenever an existing code doesn't accurately describe the note required. |
