WTI Extern DAW Codes

DAW CodeMeaning
DAW 0 Substitution allowed. The most commonly used code; it is used when the generic is used in place of a brand name product.
DAW 1 Substitution not allowed. Brand product is 'medically necessary' per the prescriber.
DAW 2 Substitution allowed but the patient requested the brand name product to be dispensed.
DAW 3 Substitution allowed but the pharmacist requested the brand name product to be dispensed.
DAW 4 Substitution allowed but the generic product is not in stock.
DAW 5 Substitution allowed but the brand name is the pharmacy's generic drug (the pharmacy only stocks the brand name of the drug and doesn't carry the generic drug).
DAW 6 Override DAW code. This is the all-purpose override code and is used whenever an override is needed.
DAW 7 Substitution allowed but brand mandated by state law. (Some generic medications may not have passed state testing).
DAW 8 Substitution allowed but generic product is not available in the market place due to shortage, recall, or licensing issue.
DAW 9 Other. Another all purpose code used whenever an existing code doesn't accurately describe the note required.
