globe | a three-dimensional, or spherical, model of Earth |
map | a two-dimensional, flat representation of Earth |
latitude | an imaginary line around Earth that runs east to west, showing location relative to the equator |
equator | an imaginary circle around Earth that is the same distance from the North and South Poles and divides Earth in half; the center or 0° line of latitude |
longitude | an imaginary line running north to south from the North Pole to the South Pole that shows location relative the prime meridian |
prime meridian | the line of 0° longitude that runs from the North to the South Pole, and passes through Greenwich, England |
hemisphere | one-half of Earth |
scale | the part of a map that indicates how big an area of Earth is shown |
cartographer | a mapmaker |
elevation | the height of a physical feature above sea level |
relief | the change in elevation from one place to another |
projection | a way of showing Earth's curved surface on a flat map |
