Question | Answer |
what is Nontunneled Multi-lumen Central Venous Catheter? | A large-diameter catheter, multiple lumens 3 ports |
where is the end of Nontunneled Multi-lumen Central Venous Catheter rest? | rests in the superior vena cava or right atrium (chest placement) |
how long does Nontunneled Multi-lumen Central Venous Catheter need to be changed | 7-14 days |
what is CVC ? where does it insert? where is the end rest? | central venous catheter; inserted via the subclavian, jugular or femoral vein ; rests in the superior vena cava |
what is PA catheter? | Pulmonary Artery Catheters ; Nontunneled percutaneous central venous catheter Nontunneled percutaneous central venous catheter |
what is PA used for? | Used to monitor pulmonary artery blood pressure and cardiac function, may give IV fluids through some of the lumens. ; Pulmonary artery blood pressure, cardiac output, left heart pressures |
Proximal Injectate Port (blue)of PA use for what? | Outlet in right atrium ; Measurement of central venous pressure ; Prone to clotting ; Crystalloids only ; No vasoactive or antiarrythmia drugs ; Used to inject fluid for a cardiac output measurement |
Proximal Infusion (white) of PA use for? | No hemodynamic or monitoring value Can be a variety of colors Outlet in SVC or in right atrium No restrictions on types of fluids infused |
Pulmonary Artery Distal of PA use for | Used for measuring pulmonary artery pressures and cardiac pressures only! ; Never give medication or fluids/blood to this port. ; A pressure bag flush solution of NS is attached to keep the blood from backing up in the line. |
how CVC and a PA catheter: similar and different ? | Both: nontunneled CV Access lines for fluid/drug administration. ; CVC or “central line”: can measure right side of the heart pressures only PA Catheter: measures right & left side heart pressures, pulmonary artery blood pressure, and cardiac outpu |
what catheter use for dialysis? | Quinton cath |
what indicate to use Central Catheters? | Multiple infusions of fluids, medications, or chemotherapy: Patients receiving incompatible medications ; Infusion of fluids that are hypertonic, hyperosmolar or have divergent pH values: Infusion of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) ; dialysis |
what cause Pneumo/Hemothorax when having central cath? | Injury to pleura, vein, artery or thoracic duct during catheter insertion |
what cause Air embolism when having central cath? | Occurs when intrathoracic pressure becomes less than atmospheric pressure when the catheter is open to air. |
what cause Catheter embolism when having central cath? | Occurs when the catheter is pulled back and sheared off through inserting needle or from catheter rupture. |
what s/s for Catheter embolism | chest pain, cardiac dysrhythmias |
what do you do when flushing? | Never use excessive force when flushing VADs. Avoid using syringes < 3ml in size to decrease pressure on catheter. 10mL syringes are recommended |
