Term | Definition |
Phase | the different shapes of the moon you see from Earth |
Eclipse | when an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, it casts a shadow on the third object |
Umbra | the very darkest part of the shadow during an eclipse, where the light from the sun is completely blocked |
Penumbra | the area of the shadow during an eclipse where the sun is only partially blocked |
Tide | the rise and fall of ocean water that occur approximately every 12.5 hours, and are a result from gravitational differences between Earth, the moon, and the sun |
Spring Tide | when the gravity of the sun and moon combine to produces a significant difference between low and high tide (during new moon and full moon phases) |
Neap Tide | when the moon, sun, and earth are at a right angle and the moon and sun's gravity is pulling in different directions to cause the least difference in high and low tide (1st and 3rd quarter moons) |
Waxing | when the amount of light reflected/illuminated on the moon appears to grow /increase each night |
Waning | when the amount of light reflected/illuminated on the moon appears to disappear/shrink each night |
