Question | Answer |
What is air mass? | A huge body of air that has similar temperature, air pressure, and humidity throughout. |
How do air masses move? | they are moved by the jet streams and global wind systems |
How are air masses moved in the continental U.S.? | by the prevailing westerlies and jet streams |
3 part - maritime polar (mP) - Where does it form, what is it's temperature and what is it's humidity? | OCEAN - COOL - HUMID (WET) |
3 part - continental polar (cP) - Where does it form, what is it's temperature and what is it's humidity? | LAND - COOL - DRY |
3 part - maritime tropical (mT) - Where does it form, what is it's temperature and what is it's humidity? | OCEAN - WARM - HUMID (WET) |
3 part - continental tropical (cT) - Where does it form, what is it's temperature and what is it's humidity? | LAND - WARM - DRY |
What is a warm front? | A fast-moving warm air mass that overtakes a slowly moving cold air mass. The warm air, which is less dense, rises over the cold air. |
In a warm front, if the warm air is humid, what happens? | light rain or snow falls AS THE FRONT PASSES (OR ALONG THE FRONT) passes |
In a warm front, if the warm air is dry, what happens? | scattered clouds form |
Because warm fronts generally move slowly, what type of weather will you have? | rainy or cloudy for several days |
After a warm front passes, what type of weather will you have? | warm and humid |
What is a cold front? | A rapidly moving cold air mass that runs into a slowly moving warm air mass. The denser cold air sinks under the lighter warm air pushing the warm air upward along the leading edge of the colder air. |
In a cold front, when the warm air rises, cools and reaches the dew point , what occurs? | it starts to condense forming tiny water droplets or ice crystals, which the form clouds |
In a cold front, if the warm air is humid, what happens? | heavy rain or snow fall, AS THE FRONT PASSES (OR ALONG THE FRONT) |
In a cold front, if the warm air is dry, what happens? | there may only be cloudy skies, AS THE FRONT PASSES (OR ALONG THE FRONT), |
Since cold fronts tend to move quickly, what can they cause? | sudden, violent weather changes resulting in thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes |
After a cold front passes, what type of weather will you have? | cooler/colder and drier weather, bringing clear skies and shifting winds |
How does a stationary front form? | when weak warm and cold air masses meet, but neither can move the other |
In a stationary front, where the two air masses meet what does the water vapor in the warm air condenses into? | rain, snow, fog, or clouds |
In a stationary front, if the air masses remain stalled over an area, what will the weather be like? | cloudy, or rain/snow for several days |
What does the weather that occurs after the stationary front has passed depend on? | what type of air mass comes in to take the place of the stationary front |
What is the most complex of the fronts? | occluded front |
Where does a occluded front occur? | occurs where a warm air mass is caught between two cooler air masses |
How does the air move in an occluded front? | The cooler, denser air moves underneath the warmer, less dense air pushing it upward, cutting it off from the surface. The two cooler air masses meet in the middle and may mix. |
In an occluded front, as the warm air cools, up in the atmosphere, what is the weather like? | cloudy and rain/snow may fall |
