ossicles | three tiny bones in the middle ear that play a crucial role in the transmission of sound; the malleus, incus and stapes |
turbinates (or concha) | projection from the lateral wall of the nose that is covered with mucous membranes that greatly increase the surface area within the nose |
labyrinth | bony and membranous system of interconnecting tubes in the inner ear that is essential for hearing and equilibrium |
stensen's ducts | openings from the parotid glands that are located just opposite the upper second molars |
papilla | small projection on the dorsal surface of the tongue; contains taste buds |
otitis media | inflammation or infection of the middle ear |
paranasal sinuses | air-filled cavities in the cranial bones that are lined with mucous membranes |
sulcus terminalis | midline depression separating the anterior two-thirds from the posterior one-third of the tongue |
auricle | aka pinna; external flap of the ear |
uvula | fingerlike projection hanging from the center of the soft palate |
eustachian tube | auditory tube that serves as an air channel connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx to allow equalization of air pressure in the ear with atmospheric pressure |
cerumen | waxlike substance produced in the ear canal |
semicircular canals | anterior, posterior, and lateral canals in the bony labyrinth of the inner ear that provide balance and equilibrium |
linear raphe | straight ridge in the middle of the hard palate |
cochlea | snail-shaped structure in the bony labyrinth of the inner ear |
presbycusis | hearing loss commonly found in older individuals |
