astronomy | the study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space |
rotation | -the spinning of the Earth on its axis -takes 24 hours -causes day and night |
axis | -the imaginary line that passes trhough the Earth's center and the North and South poles -imaginary line on which the Earth spins -tilted at 23.5 degrees |
revolution | -movement of one object around the other (Earth travels around the sun) -Earth travels around the sun, takes 1 year or 365 1/4 days |
orbit | -Earth's path as it revolves around the sun -Earth's path is a flattened circle, or oval shape- called an ellipse |
seasons | -caused by the Earth's tilt on its axis as it moves (revolves) around the sun |
poles | -Energy from the sun is spread out over a greater area, causes these areas to have lower temperatures -Sunlight hits these areas at an angle because the Earth is tilted on its axis |
equator | Sunlight hits this area more directly because the Earth is tilted on its axis |
summer | When the north end of Earth's axis is tilted toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere has ________________. |
winter | When it is Summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is ___________ in the Southern Hemisphere |
hemisphere | -one half of the sphere that makes up Earth's surface -North or South of the equator |
summer | In the Northern Hemisphere the Earth is at its greatest distance from the sun during _______________. |
true | Summer and Winter are not affected by changes in Earth's distance from the sun -(true or false) |
longer | The hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun will have ____________ days - (shorter or longer) |
direct | The hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun will recieve more ___________ rays from the sun. - (direct or indirect) |
solstice | -two days each year, when the noon sun is overhead at either 23.5 degrees south or 23.5 degrees north (longest and shortest day of the year) |
equinox | -occurs half way between the solstices, when neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun (two days a year) -means "equal night and day" |
