renewable | resource which can be used repeatedly and replaced naturally. |
nonrenewable | economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption. |
ecosystem | A system that includes all living organisms in an area as well as its physical environment functioning together as a unit. |
enviornment | the air, water, minerals, organisms, and all other external factors surrounding and affecting a given organism at any time. |
Homostasis | refers to the ability of the body or a cell to seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment when dealing with external changes |
abiotic | factors are non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems. |
biotic | living components of an ecosystem |
biome | geographic region of earth that is inhabited by a community of distinct types of plants and associated animal species |
niche | role an organism plays within an ecosystem including the food it eats and how it obtains that food. |
acid deposition | acid rain, droplets and solid particles with up to 1,000 times the acidity of normal rain |
stream order | also helps people like biogeographers and biologists in determining what types of life might be present in the waterway. |
topographic map | detailed map of the surface features of land. It includes the mountains, hills, creeks, and other bumps and lumps on a particular hunk of earth. |
watershed | also known as a drainage basin, is an area of land where all water drains to a central point like a lake, river, or stream. |
wetlands | area that contains unique types of soil, is home to plants adapted to wet environment, and contain water all year or at certain times during the year |
hydrology | he scientific study of the waters of the earth, especially with relation to the effects of precipitation and evaporation upon the occurrence and character of water in streams, lakes, and on or below the land surface. |
groundwater | water from rain and melting snow that seeps into the ground and is stored beneath earths surface. |
mitigition | industry to describe projects or programs intended to offset known impacts to an existing historic or natural resource such as a stream, wetland |

lotic | inhabiting or situated in rapidly moving fresh water. |
