Term | Definition |
Heart | organ in the body that pumps blood around the body |
red blood cell | blood cell that carries oxygen around the body |
haemoglobin | molecule, made of iron in the red blood cell, to carry oxygen |
white blood cell | fights infection |
platelets | blood cell which forms clots and scabs and prevents bleeding out |
plasma | liquid part of the blood - carries gases, nutrients, wastes etc |
artery | carries oxygenated blood away from the heart. Description: has thick wall, thin lumen, blood under high pressure |
vein | carries deoxygenated blood to the heart. Description: has thin wall, large lumen, valves |
capillary | tiny blood vessel one cell thick that connects arteries and veins |
atrium | these are the top two chambers of the heart |
ventricle | these are the bottom two chambers of the heart |
septum | middle wall of the heart separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood |
cardiac muscle | special type of muscle the heart is made of - never tires |
