Question | Answer |
Photoreceptors | Light |
Thermoreceptors | Heat |
Mechanoreceptors | Movement |
Chemoreceptors | Taste/smell |
Nocireceptors | Pain |
Sensory neuron | Senses conditions in and out of body, gives info to central system |
Interneurons | Interconnect other neurons (in central system) |
Motor neuron | Sends instructions from central system to body; squeezes either a muscle or a gland |
Axon | long part of neuron |
Cell body | Large part of neuron |
Dendrite | structures connected to cell body of a neuron; receives neurotransmitters through exocytosis by the synapses of another neuron |
Myelin sheath | protects axon |
Terminals | structures at the end of a neuron opposite of the cell body |
Synapse | Structure at the end of terminals; uses exocytosis to help the neurotransmitters leave one neuron and activate receptors on the dendrites of the next neuron |
Rods in retina | Detect light and dark |
Cones in retina | Detect color |
Retina | In the back of eye; contains rods and cones |
Optic nerve | Attached to back of eye; source of blind spot because there are no rods or cones in this area |
Cerebrum | main part of brain |
Cerebellum | structure in back of brain; responsible for coordination |
Brainstem | structure in middle of brain |
ALS | amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; kills motor neurons and causes muscles to weaken. Causes no mental problems |
Parkinsons | resting tremor, shuffling gait (shortage of dopamine) |
Multiple sclerosis | T-Cells identify myelin as an antigen and attack it; causes neurological disorders |
Cochlea | Structure in ear; contains fluid and cilia; responsible for balance because it detects up and down |
