Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) | Glow leftover from the Big Bang |
Universe | Space and all the matter and energy in it |
Galaxy | A huge system of stars |
Electromagnetic Spectrum | The full range of electromagnetic radiation |
Astronomical Unit (AU) | Distance from the earth to the sun |
Light Year | The distance light travels in one year |
Cosmology | Study of the universe |
Solar System | A system of objects that revolves around a star |
Star | Giant ball of hot gas |
Stellar Spectra | Continuous black body spectrum and photosphere |
Planet | A large body in a space that orbits a star but does not produce any light of its own |
Solar Nebula | A large cloud of gas and dust |
Gas Giant | A large planet; Composed mainly of gas |
Nuclear Fusion | The process of which hydrogen atoms join together in the suns core to form helium |
Main Sequence | Diagonal pattern of stars |
HR Diagram | A graph relating the temperature and brightness of a star |
Red Giant | A large, reddish star late in its life cycle |
White Dwarf | A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old star |
Nova | A star that explosively increases in brightness |
Neutron Star | A small sphere of neutrons left behind by a massive-star supernova |
Pulsar | A rapidly spinning neutron star that produces radio waves |
Black Hole | An object whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escaoe |
Convective Zone | A location within the sun where the hot material rises and the cool material falls back inward; Movement of matter as a result of temperature differneces |
Photosphere | The visible surface of the sun |
Chromosphere | The middle layer of the sun's atmosphere |
Corona | The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere |
Sunspot | A dark area of gas on the sun's surface that is colder than surrounding gases |
Prominence | A loop of gases that protrudes from the sun's surface, linking parts of the sunspot regions |
Solar Flare | A sudden eruption of intense high-energy radiation from the sun's surface |
Coronal Mass Ejection | An event when hot coronal gas is suddenly ejected into space with speeds of hundreds kilometers per second |
