Term | Definition |
stimuli | are any changes in an organism's environment that cause a response. |
tropism | plant growth toward or a away from an external stimulus. |
light | leaves and stems tend to grow in the direction of light, root generally grow away from the light. |
touch | the structures called tendrils, help to hold the plants |
gravity | stem grows away from the gravity, but the root grow toward the gravity. |
Auxins | they grow toward light. |
Ethylene | helps stimulate the ripening of fruit. |
Gibberellins | increase the rate of the cell division and cell elongation. |
Cytokenins | increase the rate of cell division and slow the aging process of flowers and fruits. |

Plant hormones | a substance that acts as a chemical messenger within a plant. |
Long-day Plants | Plants that flower when exposed to less than 10-12 hours of darkness. |
Short-day plants | plants that require 12 or more hours of darkness for flowering to begin. |
Day-Neutral Plants | the flowering of some plant doesn't seem to be affected by the number of hours of darkness. |
