Term | Definition |
Water cycle | The continuous movement of the water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean. |
Evaporation | Takes place when water from the oceans and the earths surface changes into water vapor. |
Condensation | Takes place when water vapor cools and changes into water droplets that form clouds in the atmosphere. |
Precipitation | Is rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls from clouds onto the earthâs land and oceans. |

Runoff | Precipitation that flows over land into streams and rivers. |
Percolation | The downward movement of water through pores and other spaces in soil due to gravity |
Groundwater | |
The water within the rocks below the earthâs surface. | |
Water table | The upper surface of underground water. |
Aquifer | A body of rock or Sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater. |
Porosity | The percentage of the total volume of a rock or Sediment that consists of open space. |
Permeability | The ability of a rock or Sediment to let fluids pass through its open spaces, or pores. |
Impermeable | A rock that stops the flow of water |
Artesian spring | A spring whose water flows from a crack in the cap rock over the aquifer. |
Well | A human-made hole that is deeper than the level of the water table. |
Zone of aeration | Rainwater passes through the upper zone. |
Zone of saturation | Farther down, the water collects in an area |
The process by which plants release water vapor into air. |
