Term | Definition |
photosynthesis | reaction in producers that uses water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight to produce food (glucose) and oxygen |
glucose | a simple sugar produced by photosynthesis and used by cell respiration |
chloroplast | organelle in plants where photosynthesis takes place |
cellular respiration | reaction that uses glucose and oxygen to produce water, carbon dioxide, and ATP |
mitochondria | organelle in all eukaryotes where cellular respiration takes place |
aerobic respiration | cellular respiration that requires oxygen; produces a high amount of ATP |
anaerobic respiration | cellular respiration that takes place without oxygen; produces a very low amount of ATP |
ATP | adenosine triphosphate; the direct source of energy for cell processes |
lactic acid fermentation | anaerobic respiration that produces lactic acid; ex. milk bacteria, muscle cells when no oxygen is present |
alcoholic fermentation | anaerobic respiration that produces alcohol and carbon dioxide; ex. yeast - baking or brewing |
