Define Suburban | A settlement where people live in a semi-urban location just outside of an urban centre (Burlington is a suburb of Hamilton) |
What is the definition of Moderate Population Density? | 15-149 people per square kilometre. Medium population size in comparison to their land area. (China, South Africa, United States) |
What is Migration? | The movement of people from one area to another. Reasons for movement may include economic, religion, political. |
What is a Scattered Settlement Pattern? | When settlement has been established in an area where living conditions make it difficult to support a large amount of people. So people must settle far apart from each other. |

What is Doubling Time? | The amount of time it takes for a population to double in size. |
What is the definition of Dense Population Density? | 150 or more people per square kilometre. Small land area in comparison to large populations. (India, Monaco, South Korea) Countries w/high pop densities usually have more desirable physical features (moderate climate, flat lands)& rich natural resource |
What is the calculation for Population Density? | It is calculated by dividing the population of a country by its area. |
What is Death Rate? | The number of deaths per one thousand people in a certain area each year. |
What are the 3 types of settlement patterns? | Linear Scattered Clustered |
What is a Clustered Settlement Pattern? | When settlements are established very close to each other, with many people living together. |
What is a Linear Settlement Pattern? | When settlement is established in a line like pattern. This has commonly occurred along major waterways |
Define Urban | A settlement where people live in an urban centre. Often referred to as a "city" (Toronto, Vancouver, New York) |
Define Rural? | A settlement where people live away from an urban centre. Often referred to as the "country" |
What are demographics? | Population statistics for a certain area including age, sex, income, education etc. |
What is the definition of Sparse Population Density? | 14 or less people per square kilometre. Small population in comparison to land area. (Canada, Australia, Greenland) |

What is Birth Rate? | number of live births per one thousand people in a certain area each year. |
How will cities need to change to accommodate population growth? | cities will need to find ways to provide good food, education and sanitation for everyone. Growth must happen in a way that does not damage the environment around us. Food production & housing may need to move from the ground to being built vertically. |
What is a Choropleth map? | a map that uses different shading, or colouring, in predefined areas to indicate the average values or quantity of something in those areas. A measure of the statistical variable being displayed on the map. |
